A Quilt from Karen Luther's Studio - Solar Eclipse Wall Hanging
Posted by Christy Dillon on 5th Aug 2017
August 21, 2017 will be an out-of-the-ordinary day! A total solar eclipse will cut diagonally across the continental United States from Oregon to South Carolina. Those living in the 70-mile corridor making up the path of totality will experience day becoming night for 2-1/2 minutes.
And what better way to celebrate this extraordinary event than with a solar eclipse quilt? We were thrilled when Karen Luther shared this fantastic quilt with us, and we immediately asked if we could share it with you as well!
Living in close proximity to the path of totality, Karen Luther and colleagues decided to contribute a quilt to the auction and luncheon supporting Covenant Point Camp and Retreat, a mission of Missouri Union Presbytery (www.campcovenantpoint.org).
First Presbyterian Church (Fulton Missouri) member Mary Osburn designed this unique pattern and pieced the quilt. She symbolically recreated evening, night, and day with superb strip piecing and different fabric colors.
Karen complimented the quilt's theme using our West Wind at Night and West Wind Edge-to-Edge patterns. She concatenated the two West Wind patterns and took advantage of the Gammill/Statler Sticher's nodes feature to move these patterns around. This clever quilting strategy enabled her to have all the stars appear only in the late evening, night, and early morning portions of the quilt.
The fill outside boundary digital design by Darlyn Maisel was used to suggest the sun’s rays coming from its core. Superior Threads So Fine #40 Arnhem Land and Magnifico Shiver, were used to also continue the theme.
We'd like to give a hearty thanks to Karen for sharing her beautiful work with us! Her business may be found at https://lutherquiltingservices.com/
